Who are the Friends of Pocahontas State Park?

Our  mission:

The mission of this 501c(3) organization is to operate on a non-profit basis, specializing in providing volunteer assistance to Pocahontas State Park. We shall provide labor and funding for programs and events that are in accordance with the mutual interests of both the Friends of Pocahontas State Park and Pocahontas State Park

Our culture:
Although we rely on members to support our many activities, we want to make sure that each of us can contribute in the manner, at the pace and at the frequency that fits our lifestyle the best.  And we love working hand in hand with partners in our community.  Cooperative and reciprocal volunteer projects with other organizations are encouraged.  Members receive free admittance to the park on the day of service.  Volunteer hours accrued (logged in to the DCR database) will allow volunteers to earn benefits such as free camping, free parking passes, and other rewards.   Members of the FoPSP support the park by assisting staff, performing improvement projects, and coordinating with other organizations associated with the park.

Some activities that Friends volunteers participate in at Pocahontas include:
  • Trail Maintenance
  • Trail Monitoring
  • Litter Control
  • Firewood Stocking
  • Children’s Programs Assistant
  • Construction Projects
  • Craft Programs Instructor
  • Guided Hikes
  • Hosting Canoe Trips
  • Hosting Cultural Festivals
  • Nature Programs Assistant
  • Visitors Services
