Cabin Work Week 2020
Our third Cabin Work Week was two weeks and focused on the Chickahominy group cabin area. This site consists of 5 camping cabins and a central lodge. The team of 36 volunteers repaired the lodge roof, painted all structures, replaced rotted wood, and repaired screens all while having a great time. Additionally, some work was performed on a historic shower house, well house doors, and next year's Cabin Work Week group cabin objective, Weyanock.
Prior to Cabin Work Week we had several volunteers preparing the site. Hands On scheduled three work days, Park Hosts worked on them, and Chesterfield youth needing to perform court assigned community service. The youth working on the cabins not only helped to stabilize the cabins, but allowed them to gain skills. This was a reminder of how these cabins were built so many years ago. |

On June 15, 2021, the team's efforts were recognized with an award for their contributions. At the Friends' monthly Zoom meeting, Dorie Stolley, Director of Community Engagement and Volunteerism and Andrea Hasenfus, Virginia State Parks Camp Host Program Manager presented the award to the team for Virginia State Parks 2020 Volunteer Group of the Year. Nominated by Hali Haskins, Chief Ranger for Volunteerism, her submission read, in part:
Cabin Work Week has established a large group of dedicated volunteers who spend 1-3 weeks every year restoring our CCC era cabins. They've recruited skilled labor of many different types and welcome all levels of volunteers. CWW has restored dilapidated CCC cabins back to working order to be used by many different scouting groups, retreats, and even weddings. They're awarded multiple grants every year and always put them to good use. CWW was able to be held again this year (2020) during the pandemic due to strictly enforced COVID-19 guidelines. We're appreciative of their dedication in keeping our volunteers and staff safe, while also continuing to complete their work.
