Pocahontas State Park offers miles of trail suitable for hiking, walking, and running. Trails can be either natural surface, gravel or dirt and will have some elevation (not flat). Take in the sights and sounds of nature while traversing woodlands in Virginia's largest state park. Some trails provide waterfront sight of Swift Creek, Beaver Lake or other watersheds. So if you're looking to stretch your legs, lace up those shoes and check out any of these trails.
Beaver Lake Trail
One of the most popular trails in the park, the 2.5 mile hiking-only Beaver Lake Trail can most easily be accessed from a trailhead near the CCC Museum parking lot. A CCC-built dam created the lake which is completely encircled by the trail. About halfway around the lake remnants of an old mill site are visible. Pawpaw trees line a long boardwalk that crosses through a wetland. Expect beautiful lake views along the shoreline and from high, shaded, overlooks.
Co-Op and Trooper's Tribute Trails
Opened in 2019, the linked Co-op and Troopers Tribute Loop Trails run along the very scenic northwest shore of Swift Creek Lake. Multiple hiking-only loop combinations of varying distances are possible as Co-op Trail intersects with several short connectors and hiking-only sections of Forest Exploration Trail. This trail presents a very peaceful and quiet experience with numerous wildlife viewing opportunities. The main Co-op trailhead is just across the bridge from the boat ramp.
Big Poplar Trail
Opened in 2016 this 0.7 mile loop can be accessed from the Visitor Center parking lot. Winding its way among large trees, including a giant tulip poplar, it offers a stunning view of Swift Creek from a high vantage point. It links to Ground Pine Path and Beaver Lake Trail creating several hiking-only loop options of varying distances.
Miles of multi-use Gravel (Fireroad) trails
With more than 54 miles of multi-use trails, Pocahontas offers a variety of options ranging from fire roads to double-track trails designed to provide a tour of the park by foot. Multiuse trails are used by hikers, trail runners, bikers, and in some areas, equestrian users also.
