In Remembrance: Stan Morgan

Stan Morgan was the longest serving volunteer and member of the Friends of Pocahontas State Park.  His service to the outdoor running and biking community is eclipsed only by his enduring career as Coach to countless young people at Midlothian High School in Chesterfield County.
At Pocahontas, when he wasn't setting up and running cross-country races or riding one of his mountain bikes, Stan would spend hours helping to keep fireroad trails clear, sometimes running a tractor with brush cutter attached.  He also gave his time to the mountain bike community as a frequent assistant to various race organizers, where he would put up race barriers and signage and generally gave "orders" as  needed to add some structure to the chaos that was characteristic of large run/bike events. 
​As a founding member of the Friends of Pocahontas, Stan helped establish the first mountain bike trail system in Pocahontas:  for many years the trails were known simply as the "Green, Blue and Red Trails" (blaze colors that were used to designate the three distinct trails).  Some years later, when Park staff was working on map and signage updates, it was decided to rename that same trail system as "The Morgan Trails", a name which remains in use today. 
As Stan grew older, he slowed down only so slightly but remained a constant presence at the park and a role-model (and coach!) for many.  He will be missed tremendously.
Stan Morgan died Nov. 9, 2023 at the age of 84.
