Register through Dec. 1 for master naturalist training The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists will accept registrations through Dec. 1 for the 2014 basic training class, to be held from Jan. 7 through mid- April. Sponsored by several state government agencies, the Virginia Master Naturalist program is designed to provide a cadre of volunteers to assist in a variety of interesting projects. The 40-hour basic training program provides the member with the basic education needed to assist in state research projects, public educational programs and an array of projects to enhance the beauty and usability of Pocahontas State Park. The curriculum includes geology, herpetology, botany, ornithology, native plants, basic ecology, mammalogy and aquatic ecology. Trainees will participate in field trips, and the classes are designed for individuals with any background or educational experience.
